There’s something fascinating about watching a movie come together. The scriptwriter spends hours crafting dialogue, emotion, and storylines, but once that script is finished, it’s placed into the hands of the actors and director. The writer can’t step onto the stage and perform it; their job is to write it out and trust that the cast will bring it to life.
In a lot of ways, that’s how our faith works. God asks us to write the script of belief, to trust Him, to show up, and to put our faith on paper through prayer and obedience. But the performing? That’s all Him.
There have been times in my life when I tried to “perform” both roles, the writer and the director. I wanted to control the outcome, dictate the timing, and make sure everything turned out just right. Maybe you’ve been there too. You believe in God’s promises, but waiting for Him to perform them can feel uncertain. You start wondering if you need to step in and make it happen yourself.
But God gently reminds us in Philippians 1:6 (KJV): “Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ.” The word perform means to complete, to fulfill, to bring to full expression. It’s a promise that what God starts, He finishes. Our role is not to perform, but to believe. Just as a scriptwriter doesn’t act out the story but trusts the actors to do their part, we must trust God to do His.
You don’t have to force what God has already promised to fulfill. You just need to keep showing up in faith, writing your “yes” with every prayer, every act of obedience, every quiet moment of trust. He’s the One who breathes life into your story. So, hand Him the script. Believe what He told you. And then watch Him perform it better than you ever could.
Prayer:
Lord, thank You for reminding me that my job is to believe, not to perform. Forgive me for trying to take over what only You can do. Help me to trust Your timing, Your direction, and Your perfect performance of every promise You’ve spoken over my life. Strengthen my faith when waiting feels hard and remind me that You never leave a story unfinished. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Reflection Questions:
- In what area of your life have you been trying to “perform” instead of letting God take the lead?
- What promise has God made that you need to start believing for again?
- How can you show your faith this week, even before you see the performance?
