Let Your Light Shine

FGHT Devotion

“Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.”
Matthew 5:14-16 KJV

It does not take a rocket scientist to figure out the world is full of darkness. Sin has caused us to experience things we never should have known. Whether we were committing the sins or someone was sinning against us, sin has brought brokenness, heartache, pain, and tears. Yet the devil in his smartness has managed to evade responsibility because men point fingers at one another, throwing rocks and hiding their hands. That is why it is important for us to let our light shine. Light allows improves our vision. When we walk around with a dim light only those extremely close benefit, but when we really let it shine, many can see the truth that sin is the problem and Jesus is the answer. Why should we let our light shine? We should do it because men need to see the truth. Without light there is no direction, and in darkness you are blind to the enemy.

I remember watching this video documentary in 2005 entitled “Beef.” It was about hip-hop beef. One rapper talked about a situation that occurred with his crew and another rapper’s crew. They ended up in a studio or something together and started brawling. In the midst of the scuffle, the lights got turned off. He said he heard “get the strap!”, so he pulled out his knife and just started “poking” people. He started stabbing anyone close to him no matter the “who.”. In darkness everyone becomes the enemy.

So again, why should we let our light shine? We must shine that men may see the real cause of their anguish and despair is Satan. They can correctly identify the foe, instead of blaming family members, other men or women, politicians, or supervisors, as the devil himself working in the hearts of men. Secondly, and most importantly, we should shine that men may glorify God. Our shining light points people to Christ. He is the answer to our problems; the solution to all pain.

“Let Your Light Shine”
By Charles H. Gabriel

Let your light shine, let your light shine,
That others may behold!
Its glowing rays perchance may bring
Some wand’rer to the fold
Let your light shine, let your light shine,
And shed its beams abroad;
‘Twill show the world you’re not ashamed
Of Christ, the Lamb of God
Let your light shine, let your light shine,
That all the world may see
Your works of mercy and of love,
That they may follow thee.
