“Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man? And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.”
– Luke 1:34-35
Mary was a young, ordinary girl from Nazareth when she received an extraordinary message. The angel Gabriel appeared to her with an astounding promise: she would conceive and give birth to a son, Jesus, the Savior of the world. This wasn’t just any promise—it was one that defied natural explanation. Understandably, Mary asked, “How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?” (Luke 1:34). Gabriel reassured her, explaining that this miracle would happen through the power of the Holy Spirit, saying, “The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee” (Luke 1:35). It wasn’t up to Mary to figure out how—it was up to God to make it happen.
Mary’s question reflects a natural response to the supernatural: How will this be? Yet, Gabriel’s reply reminds us that God’s Word comes with His power—it’s never spoken in vain.
Have you ever received a gift—maybe a toy or gadget—and realized it needed batteries to work? How frustrating it is when the batteries aren’t included, leaving you unable to enjoy the gift right away! But how wonderful is it when the giver includes the batteries, ensuring that everything you need is right there? No waiting. No searching. No frustration. For the gift to work, all you have to do is turn it on. Because the batteries are included, it starts working immediately.
Reflection:
- Are you holding onto a promise from God but worrying about how it will happen?
- What would it look like to let go of the “how” and simply believe that God’s Word will not fail?
- Have you been “turning on” the Word by speaking it and believing it?
Prayer:
Lord, thank You for Your Word, which comes with the power to fulfill itself. Help me to trust You completely and believe that nothing is impossible with You. Teach me to speak Your promises in faith, turn them on in my life, and rest in the assurance that Your Word will not return void. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
